In the Book of John, chapter 8, Jesus endured a test of the legal experts and Pharisees when they brought before him a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They recited the Old Testament law that required she be stoned for her sins. They were seeking a response from him in the hopes of being able to bring a similar charge against him. Jesus responded that whoever is without sin should throw the first stone.
First Pres’ social justice group’s name was inspired by this Bible story and a video by Bryan Stevenson. We seek to be stone catchers – to be the ones who stand up for the downtrodden, to be a voice for the marginalized, and to seek justice for the oppressed.
Stone Catchers engages in a variety of social justice issues including letter writing campaigns, peaceful protests and demonstrations, educational opportunities, and much more. We also support the work of the Presbyterian Mission Agency in the areas of advocacy and social justice. Click here to learn more about the Presbyterian Mission Agency.
