Pre-Teens, Teens, and Young Adults

Due to the current public health crisis, programming for youth is a mix of in person and virtual. Please contact TC Anderson for up to date information about youth programming

It's about feeling at home.

In First Pres Youth Ministries, we focus on fun and faith. We help middle school and high school students feel at ease in their church home. First Pres is a place where they can explore their faith, develop a relationship with God, learn about themselves, meet friends, serve others, and have fun. We also actively engage with college-age young adults to connect them with their church. We gather for fun events, engage in service (mission) activities, and take summer trips for faith growth and adventure.

Sunday School

Youth at First Pres participate in Sunday school programs (10:30-11:30 am, September through May) tailored specifically for their age groups, including Y-Search for middle school students in grades 6-7; Confirmation for grade 8; and High School Sunday School for grades 9-12.

Y-Search (grades 6-7)

In Y-Search (Sundays, 10:30-11:30 am), middle school youth grow in faith by exploring the Bible, being led in discussion, and asking questions. This helps them to learn about who they are, who God is, and how to live faithfully in the world.

Confirmation (grade 8)

The Confirmation program (with its Sunday class, 10:30-11:30 am) at First Pres is designed to help eighth graders dig deeply into matters of faith. Our class curriculum fosters engaging conversation and dialogue about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, prayer, the Bible, the church, and other matters of faith. The class is designed for intensive learning and requires regular attendance and participation. Our eighth graders and their adult leaders learn and grow together. The eighth grade Confirmation class culminates every year on Celebration Sunday, a special time to celebrate how far our eighth grade youth have come in their faith journeys and to encourage them to continue walking this path of faith exploration and development.

After eighth grade, youth have the opportunity to choose to continue along in the Discipleship program, which extends into high school and leads to church membership, if so desired.

High School Sunday School (grades 9-12)

Every Sunday (10:30-11:30 am), our high school youth gather in the High School Lounge for food, prayer, Bible study, and fellowship. Together, they look at how the Bible, their faith, and God connect with their daily lives.

Youth Group (YG)

Youth Group (YG) is an opportunity to have fun and grow in a supportive environment as we talk about what it means to be a Christian in today’s world and the challenges of being a youth. Our youth can participate in fun fellowship activities, faith-development opportunities (youth conference and retreats), and summer mission trips and local service projects.

Middle School Youth Group (MSYG)

Middle School YG (MSYG) meets weekly during Family Night on Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:00 pm. The evening starts with dinner, from 6:00-7:00 pm, where the youth can either sit with their families, sit as a groups together, or interact with attendees younger and/or much older than themselves. It has a definite family feel. MSYG is then a time for just middle school (grades 6-8) youth and their adult leaders to gather for faith, fun and fellowship, playing games, learning lessons about life, and listening to each other’s highs and lows for the week. Due to the large number of school districts represented by church membership and the Family Night ministry, our youth get to build relationships with youth they normally wouldn’t meet.

High School Youth Group (HSYG)

HSYG (for grades 9-12) gathers Sunday evenings, 6:00-8:00 pm, to grow in relationship with God and each other. Our high school youth ministry offers a wide range of programs and activities designed to develop well rounded and grounded disciples of Christ. Our program draws from at least seven different high schools in the area, bringing together teens from all over the northwest suburbs of Chicago. By the time they are graduating high school seniors, our high school youth will have been challenged in their faith, served others in mission, and made friendships that will last a lifetime.

CollegeCARE connects young adults.

CollegeCARE is our ministry for college-age youth and their families. We are focused on continuing to grow relationships with God, the church, and each other. We connect through preparing and sending care packages; gatherings and activities over holiday and summer breaks; service projects and mission trips; and ongoing contact through social media and phone calls. All of this is designed to let the college youth know that while they may not frequently be physically at the church, they are still very much a part of it.
