This Sunday for our sermon series, Trending, we are talking about one of the most famous scriptures in the New Testament when Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This is one of the most restrictive statements in the Bible because it sets up a very black and white dichotomy: the only way to get to God is through Jesus.
This scripture has been a great comfort to many Christians throughout the centuries in reassuring them that their faith is leading them in the right direction. However, for other people, this scripture has been greatly distressing. The notion that God will block us out of heaven if our faith is deemed too weak or if we didn’t believe in the right way has caused many people to wonder if they or their family members will be part of God’s family in heaven.
This Sunday we are going to discuss a different way of interpreting these verses and why they would have been compelling motivations for Jews during the first century to believe in Jesus as the messiah. The great thing is that you will walk away with a sense that God loves us, cares for us, and wants the best for us now and in the life to come. I look forward to greeting you on Sunday for Mother’s Day. I hope you enjoy a sunny and beautiful weekend. See you soon!
